Medical ageism is the discrimination of older patients in healthcare settings based on their age. It can manifest in a variety of ways. Ageism can be a cross-cultural reality that can creep in even when the intent is benign. It can stem from stereotypes, assumptions, and prejudices, such as the idea that older people are frail and helpless, or that they are difficult and unpleasant. These assumptions can lead to a reluctance to recognize and respect the needs of older adults.
